The first groups of participants in C4D in Asturias, Spain, their families and healthcare professionals celebrated the finish of the first 12 months of the programme on 14 March 2025 in a joint session in Soto de Ribera, Asturias.
The general director of Social and Healthcare Care and Coordination, Rocío Allande, attended the session together with patients, family members and the multidisciplinary team made up of 20 healthcare professionals: two doctors and 18 nurses from the diabetes, primary care and mental health units.
During this meeting, the results of this year were presented. The good results are reflected in the reduction of the abdominal perimeter, with an average of 10.8 centimeters, compared to the 8.3 recorded halfway through the program, after six months. Likewise, the body mass index (BMI) has dropped, on average, by 1.6 points and the weight loss of the participants is around 5.2 kilos. These data are relevant, since the fat accumulated around the main organs causes alterations in cholesterol, increases the risk of diabetes and raises blood pressure and the risk of thrombosis, factors that favor the development of cardiovascular diseases.
The Asturian team is working to replicate the project, which is based on healthy habits of nutrition, physical activity and rest, within the Asturian School of Care.
The Ministry of Health of the Principality of Asturias also informed about their plans to maintain the European program CARE4DIABETES, which has succeeded in eliminating medication for almost half of the participants.
The Regional Ministry of Health has now launched the second phase of the project and hopes to confirm or improve the data obtained so far.
