The European initiative Care4Diabetes (C4D) is showing preliminary remarkable results in the fight against type 2 diabetes. By focusing on lifestyle changes—nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and relaxation—the program has helped 80% of participating patients reduce their medication and enabled 37% to stop taking it altogether in the region of Asturias, Spain. Even more striking, about half of the patients achieved a reversal of diabetes, defined as maintaining normal blood sugar levels without medication for at least three months.

The program, funded with €4 million and spanning 36 months, adapts the Dutch model Reverse Diabetes2 Now and is being implemented in 12 European countries, including several regions of Spain. In Asturias, the pilot study showed participants lost an average of 5 kg of body weight, reduced waist circumference by 6 cm, and lowered glycated hemoglobin levels to an average of 6.5% after one year.

Key to the program’s success is its holistic and progressive approach: setting small, achievable goals, fostering group sessions where patients share experiences, and providing multidisciplinary support from healthcare professionals, coaches, and nutritionists. This approach not only improves health outcomes but also cuts pharmaceutical costs by 43% in the region.

The results highlight how structured lifestyle education can empower patients, reduce dependency on medication, and even reverse type 2 diabetes in many cases—offering a hopeful model for healthcare systems across Europe.
